In the 1750’s the architect Nikolaj Eigtved drew one of the main works of Danish building art,
Amalienborg. A statue of the founder of Frederiksstaden, Frederik V, is located in the middle of the
castle square, which is surrounded by four almost identical mansions. The mansions were originally
built for living by the four dignitary Lords, but in the year of 1794 Christiansborg Castle burned
down and the Royal Family moved into Amalienborg. Ever since then the regents have lived at the
different mansions of Amalienborg.
The mansion of Christian VII is the guest mansion of the Queen. When important people from around
the world, like presidents or royals, are visiting Copenhagen, this is where they stay.
The mansion of Christian IIX is where the museum “Amalienborg” is at. Here you can take a trip down
the history through the last 150 years of the Danish Royals. Inside this mansion you will find the
rooms of the former Danish monarchs originally kept - as the Kings and Queens installed them back in
the days.
The mansions of Frederik IIX works as the home of the Crown Prince, Frederik, and the Crown
Princess, Mary.
The mansion of Christian IX is the regents official residence. When the flag is up, this means that
the Queen is home. This mansion is not available to the public.
The Royal Guard is guarding Amalienborg every day. They have big staff shifts every day at 12pm that
attract a big audience. Besides that they do small staff shifts every second hour.
